Our Story

Rosewood is a robust integrated real estate finance and development firm focused on strategic high-impact development opportunities that impact lives. We implement creative, strategic, dynamic, and long-term investments in viable real estate projects. Our goal is to develop and finance projects that will affect change in their respective neighborhoods. Founded in December 2017, Rosewood has executed more than 70 real estate transactions, representing over $1 billion of gross asset value in Washington, DC and the surrounding areas.


As a small business, we are growing – fine-tuning our business model, increasing our portfolio of work, expanding geographically, empowering communities, igniting possibilities, and changing lives one investment at a time.


In 2017, after serving as Vice President of a Washington, DC based real estate development firm, Diarra McKinney founded Rosewood Strategies. Rosewood’s real estate development and finance division prides itself on developing high impact institutional assets, affordable and mixed-income communities, infill retail concepts, as well as market-rate single family, condo, and mixed-use projects in urban neighborhoods throughout the Washington Metropolitan region. Rosewood explicitly incorporates innovative and impactful architecture, landscape, and interiors in all its projects.

The foundation for Rosewood was laid inside a small apartment in Washington, DC by parents of managing principal, Diarra McKinney. While raising seven children with a strong determination that one day their children would be doctors, lawyers, scientists, and engineers, Diarra’s parents instilled in their children the belief that they would change the world. This is the vision that birthed Rosewood Strategies.

In his previous role as Vice President of Acquisitions and Development at Neighborhood Development Company, Mr. McKinney was responsible for acquisitions and predevelopment. In this role Mr. McKinney led the company’s efforts to acquire development sites and existing buildings that fit the firm’s investment profile. Prior to joining NDC, Mr. McKinney worked at Clark Realty Capital and Ditto Residential. While at Clark Realty Capital, Mr. McKinney was a Development Executive who managed predevelopment activities for a $3.5 billion, 140-acre mixed-use public/private development project in Washington, DC, among other projects. While at Ditto Residential, Mr. McKinney was the Director of Acquisitions and was responsible for all of the new acquisitions for the firm. Throughout his career, Mr. McKinney has focused on development opportunities ranging between $20 – $200 million in total development costs.

Prior to his business and legal endeavors, Diarra spent two years as a High School Mathematics Teacher and Mathematics Department Coordinator at the Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington, DC, where he taught 9th and 10th grade students. Mr. McKinney is a native Washingtonian and a proud graduate of Washington, DC public schools. Mr. McKinney holds a BA from Stanford University, a JD from Yale Law School, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Diarra McKinney is the founder and CEO of Rosewood Strategies, a real estate development firm located in Washington, DC that focuses on high impact urban infill development. Diarra has focused his career on deals ranging from $20 – $200 million. With over 17 years in real estate acquisitions, finance, and development, he has secured more than $130 million in opportunistic real estate deals, reflecting a total asset value exceeding $650 million. Rosewood Strategies serves as the Real Estate Advisor for several non-profit institutions, including Martha’s Table, Jubilee Housing, Project Create, Recovery Café, and Community of Hope. He formerly served as Vice President of Acquisitions and Development at Neighborhood Development Company, Director of Acquisitions at Ditto Residential, and Development Executive at Clark Realty Capital. He is a native Washingtonian and a proud graduate of DC Public Schools, Stanford University, Yale Law School, and Harvard Business School.

Autumn Tomlin assists the company’s efforts on acquisitions, project finance, construction management, and financial management. Previously, Ms. Tomlin worked at Foulger-Pratt Development (Foulger-Pratt) and Stonebridge. At Stonebridge, Ms. Tomlin was a Development Intern and was integral to the construction management of a 1.2 million sq. ft. 750-unit mixed use development in Virginia. At Foulger-Pratt, Ms. Tomlin was a Development Analyst and focused on affordable and market-rate mixed-use, LIHTC affordable build-for-rent, and market rate build-for-rent projects. While at Foulger-Pratt, she co-led the development and construction management of over 600,000 sq ft of development including the firms first build-for-rent project. Ms. Tomlin holds a Master of Architecture from Howard University. Following her matriculation, she remains a DC resident.
