Our Story

Rosewood is a robust integrated real estate finance and development firm focused on strategic high-impact development opportunities that impact lives. We implement creative, strategic, dynamic, and long-term investments in viable real estate projects. Our goal is to develop and finance projects that will affect change in their respective neighborhoods. Founded in December 2017, Rosewood has executed more than 70 real estate transactions, representing over $1 billion of gross asset value in Washington, DC and the surrounding areas.

As a small business, we are growing – fine-tuning our business model, increasing our portfolio of work, expanding geographically, empowering communities, igniting possibilities, and changing lives one investment at a time.

In 2017, after serving as Vice President of a Washington, DC based real estate development firm, Diarra McKinney founded Rosewood Strategies. Rosewood’s real estate development and finance division prides itself on developing high impact institutional assets, affordable and mixed-income communities, infill retail concepts, as well as market-rate single family, condo, and mixed-use projects in urban neighborhoods throughout the Washington Metropolitan region. Rosewood explicitly incorporates innovative and impactful architecture, landscape, and interiors in all its projects.

The foundation for Rosewood was laid inside a small apartment in Washington, DC by parents of managing principal, Diarra McKinney. While raising seven children with a strong determination that one day their children would be doctors, lawyers, scientists, and engineers, Diarra’s parents instilled in their children the belief that they would change the world. This is the vision that birthed Rosewood Strategies.

In his previous role as Vice President of Acquisitions and Development at Neighborhood Development Company, Mr. McKinney was responsible for acquisitions and predevelopment. In this role Mr. McKinney led the company’s efforts to acquire development sites and existing buildings that fit the firm’s investment profile. Prior to joining NDC, Mr. McKinney worked at Clark Realty Capital and Ditto Residential. While at Clark Realty Capital, Mr. McKinney was a Development Executive who managed predevelopment activities for a $3.5 billion, 140-acre mixed-use public/private development project in Washington, DC, among other projects. While at Ditto Residential, Mr. McKinney was the Director of Acquisitions and was responsible for all of the new acquisitions for the firm. Throughout his career, Mr. McKinney has focused on development opportunities ranging between $20 – $200 million in total development costs.

Prior to his business and legal endeavors, Diarra spent two years as a High School Mathematics Teacher and Mathematics Department Coordinator at the Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington, DC, where he taught 9th and 10th grade students. Mr. McKinney is a native Washingtonian and a proud graduate of Washington, DC public schools. Mr. McKinney holds a BA from Stanford University, a JD from Yale Law School, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Rosewood’s core team frequently collaborates with a network of trusted consultants. This approach tailors the team’s expertise to the demands of each project.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

At Rosewood, our commitment to diversity and inclusion goes beyond words; it is ingrained in our core values. We are dedicated to fostering a workplace that not only welcomes but actively seeks to empower underrepresented groups, with a particular focus on minority women.

We believe in the strength of diverse perspectives and talents, and by actively seeking out and hiring from these underrepresented communities, we aim to create an inclusive and equitable workforce. This commitment is not only about fairness but also recognizing the immense value that diversity brings to our team and the success of our projects. We strive to be a beacon of opportunity, ensuring that all individuals have the chance to flourish and contribute their unique strengths in the real estate industry and beyond.

Our partnership philosophy is built on the belief that collaboration and inclusivity drive innovation and success. We actively seek to partnerships with Certified Business Enterprises (CBEs) and minority business owners on our projects for several compelling reasons:

1. Diverse Expertise: CBEs and minority-owned businesses bring a wealth of diverse expertise and fresh perspectives to our projects. This diversity can lead to innovative solutions and a broader range of ideas that enrich the final product.

2. Community Empowerment: Partnering with CBEs and minority business owners not only contributes to the success of individual entrepreneurs but also strengthens the communities they serve. It’s a way to uplift and empower underrepresented groups in the business world.

3. Economic Impact: Supporting minority-owned businesses fosters economic growth within underrepresented communities. It helps create jobs and stimulate economic development, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.

4. Inclusivity: Inclusivity is at the heart of our values. By partnering with CBEs and minority business owners, we actively promote diversity in the real estate industry, which aligns with our commitment to a more inclusive and equitable world.

Our commitment to community extends far beyond the confines of traditional real estate projects. We actively seek to partner with nonprofit organizations whose mission is to serve underserved communities and individuals who are in need of real estate expertise. We do so for several compelling reasons:

1. Social Responsibility: We recognize the responsibility that comes with our expertise in real estate. By working with nonprofit organizations, we can apply our knowledge and resources to address pressing issues and contribute to positive social change.

2. Empowering Communities: Collaborating with nonprofits allows us to empower underserved communities and individuals with the tools and knowledge needed to make informed real estate decisions. We believe that knowledge is a powerful agent for change and improvement.

3. Expanding Access: Real estate expertise is often a resource that underserved communities lack access to. Our collaboration with nonprofit organizations helps bridge this gap, ensuring that more people have access to the guidance and support they need to secure a stable and prosperous future.

4. Inclusive Development: We are committed to inclusive and equitable development. Partnering with nonprofits focused on underserved communities aligns with our values and ensures that our expertise benefits a wider range of people, contributing to a more just and inclusive society.
